Broadway Musicals Part I In-Person / Online
Broadway has been synonymous with the best theater in the United States for over 125 years. Broadway musicals have a long history of evolution, even the place where they are performed. This lecture is the story of that evolution. We will start with the very early influences and track the two major sources of the music we find on Broadway today. The path discussed in Part One will take us up to about 1940, with a look ahead to what some say is Broadway’s Golden Era, beginning with Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma” in 1943. A second lecture will be scheduled after Labor Day 2025.
Bill Holt will be your lecturer. Bill’s discussion groups have covered opera and operetta for over ten years at the Moorestown Library. He will be adding Broadway musicals to his presentations.
