Moorestown’s Shadowed Past: Slavery and the Fight for Freedom In-Person
Beneath Moorestown’s charm lies a story of bondage and resistance. From the plantations of Barbados to the fields and grand mansions of Moorestown, enslaved people lived and labored in our community. Learn about the enslaved children and adults who were held in bondage here, the wealthy enslavers, and the residents who rose up against the abomination.
Hear the heart-wrenching stories of the free Black men, women, and children who were stolen off the streets. The Moorestown Committee of the Abolition Society of Burlington County fought for their return, petitioning the courts and speaking out against the injustice. While the Society worked in daylight, the Underground Railroad worked quietly in the dark, sheltering and aiding freedom seekers.
Join us as Janet Adair brings to light a chapter of history too often left in the shadows.
This program is part of the Historical Society of Moorestown's New Jersey History Speaks Lecture Series.
