Concert: Sounds of the African Diaspora In-Person
The Marel Hidalgo Organ Trio features Marel Hidalgo on guitar and banjo, Leonieke Scheuble on organ, and Mike Camacho on drums. Their program, Sounds of the African Diaspora, offers a musical journey through rhythms that traveled from Africa to the Americas and the Caribbean, exploring styles such as blues, jazz, funk, soca, calypso, ska, rocksteady, and reggae.
Born in Neptune, New Jersey, Marel Hidalgo is a 17-year-old guitar and banjo virtuoso, arranger, and bandleader who began playing guitar at age four and performing publicly soon after. Since then he has performed widely across the United States and internationally, appearing at venues and festivals including Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, and the New York Guitar Festival. Known for blending Caribbean styles with jazz as well as performing in the straight-ahead jazz tradition, Marel has collaborated with many acclaimed musicians and continues to gain recognition on the jazz scene.
This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Moorestown Library and Wegmans.
